Chapter One
The Housing Gap: What’s Missing and Why It Matters
Rockford stands at a pivotal moment. After decades of economic transition, our city is experiencing renewed momentum – new jobs, new investment and growing positive attention from outside the region.
But, beneath that progress is a housing challenge that cannot be ignored.
According to the City of Rockford’s Housing Needs Assessment and Market Study, demand for new housing before 2033 could be as high as 9,100 additional units. The estimate reflects population growth, job expansion and years of underproduction.
What does a lack of healthy, affordable housing for all mean in practical terms?
It means working people – teachers, nursing assistants, tradespeople, hospitality workers and young professionals – may struggle to find healthy homes they can afford. It means more families might face rising rents and fewer healthy choices. It shapes whether children can remain in the same school year to year. It determines whether neighborhoods stabilize or crumble. And, it could mean employers having a harder time recruiting and retaining talent at moments of opportunity.
Simply put, housing is critical social and economic infrastructure.
In Chapter One of the PlatFORM Group’s Home For All video series, we hear from local leaders, housing professionals and disparate community voices who explain how we got here — and why what happens next matters to all of us.
This is not a series about blame or pointing fingers. It is a series about understanding housing’s role in our future – and working together to shape a prosperous home for all in the Rockford Region in the future.
